In January 2023, Mykhajlo Mudryk was well on his way to Arsenal. Until Chelsea owner Todd Boehly took out his private jet, traveled to Shakthar Donetsk’s training camp and convinced player and club that Chelsea was the next destination for the energetic winger. The Ukrainian club pulled in a whopping €70 million upon signing, with a big bonus once Mudryk had established himself at the club with the big title ambitions. Three years later, the Shakthar management understands they will probably have to look far for the rest of the transfer fee.
Since 2024, Mudryk has been suspended for doping, and this could have major financial consequences for his former club.

“We have 30 million euros in bonuses in his contract. If he doesn’t play, or if Chelsea doesn’t achieve good results, we will lose 30 million euros. It will have a big financial consequence for us,” Shakhtar director Sergei Palkin told Marca.
The Ukrainian club director is nevertheless optimistic until the end.
“I know Mudryk both as a player and as a person. I think he will come back and play again. Everyone is waiting for the decision from the court, and we don’t know when it will be.
Mudryk has a contract with Chelsea until 2031. In June 2025, the Ukrainian was formally charged by the English Football Association (FA) with violating anti-doping rules. If the 25-year-old ends up being convicted, the punishment can be up to four years of ban.
