Steven Gerrard is placed at the top of a “manager shortlist”.
Gerrard has been out of work since leaving Saudi Arabian club Al-Ettifaq in January 2025, and has since been a regular commentator for TNT Sports.

Has been without a managerial job for 15 months
The Liverpool legend was sensationally linked with an interim coaching role at Anfield during the Premier League champions’ struggles this season, but Arne Slot has salvaged the ship and the rumour has since died out.
Gerrard himself has stated that he is prepared to return to Liverpool – in any role – to help his old club.
The former Liverpool captain has not trained in England since being sacked at Aston Villa in October 2022, but could now be ready for a surprise comeback – this time with Burnley relegated to the Championship along with Wolverhampton.
Burnley were relegated from the Premier League under Scott Parker, and the former Tottenham midfielder’s future is still uncertain.
There have already been talks about Parker’s future at Turf Moor, and according to Alan Nixon, Gerrard tops Burnley’s wish list if the club decide to make a change of manager.
Nixon claims that Gerrard will “seize the opportunity” to move south again – but he may face competition for the role.

Craig Bellamy also relevant – and Celtic link
Craig Bellamy is also believed to be in the running, if he chooses to leave his position as Welsh national team manager. He has also been linked with Celtic when Martin O’Neill leaves the club at the end of the season.
Gerrard won the Scottish Premier League title during his time as manager of Rangers, but left the club to take over at Villa Park.
The former England international admitted to The Overlap that he regrets leaving the Scottish giants.
“The level was a big step up. I probably didn’t realize that when I made that decision. In hindsight – and we’re talking about hindsight, we would all be good with it, right? – I should have stayed at Rangers longer, gained more experience, stayed up there longer.
“So I regret it now, sitting here. I didn’t do that at the time. It was tough. The conversations with the Rangers after we won the league, the recruiting and financial talk – I didn’t feel like the Rangers were ready to go for it again.
“It was a bit more like: ‘Oh, we have to fix this and fix that.’ The promises weren’t as strong as I had thought. Then comes the Premier League offer and the opportunity – it’s tough. It’s hard to say no to.
“I have nothing bad to say about Villa. I have to say that too. Aston Villa is a very good club, with good people and fantastic facilities. The opportunity was given to me and it didn’t work out – it’s on me,” Gerrard said.
