The summer transfer window has not officially opened yet, but Tottenham have already thrown themselves into the job of renewing the team.

Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi are already in place at Spurs. In addition, the club is closing in on a double signing of Savinho and Jan Paul van Hecke. Admittedly, some players will have to go out to balance their finances, but that doesn’t stop Roberto De Zerbi from getting the tools he needs to lift the team next season.

And despite the fact that the defence is already well occupied, another versatile option could be on the way to North London – the interest in a future World Cup star is growing.

Tottenham chase Maxi Araujo

According to Portuguese Record , Tottenham have opened their eyes to Sporting CP’s Maxi Araujo. The 26-year-old can be used as both a left-back and a left winger – and regularly delivers goals and assists for the Portuguese.

But Spurs will have a fight. Premier League rivals Manchester United and Chelsea are also reportedly keeping an eye on the 26-year-old, and Atlético Madrid are also keeping a close eye on the situation.

It won’t be cheap anyway. Sporting insist on triggering Araujo’s £69 million buy-out clause in order to open up talks at all. The club is also said to be ready to offer him improved contract terms – the current deal runs until 2029. But only after the World Cup can there be clarification.

Araujo in World Cup action

Araujo will play group games for Uruguay against Spain, Saudi Arabia and Cape Verde. After the championship, Tottenham and the other clubs will have a clearer picture of whether he is available as early as this summer.

“Five players are fighting for the same place”

At first glance, an Araujo transfer seems a bit strange for Tottenham. They already have plenty of depth at left-back – his favourite position.

With Robertson in, Udogie back from injury, Davies recently extended his contract and Djed Spence also able to be used there, there are five players covering the same area. In addition, Souza joined in January. Admittedly, several of them are versatile.

Souza seems likely to go on loan, but even then, Tottenham are left with more options than they strictly need – especially without European Cup games next season.

The question is how De Zerbi will handle the width. Perhaps he sees an opportunity to rotate more freely. Either way, it will be exciting to follow Tottenham’s summer – because the action is already underway.
