Liverpool are ahead of the Premier League opener against Newcastle – and more specifically on Sunday. But the transfer window is still wide open, and Andoni Iraola has only had three newcomers to enjoy so far.

Liverpool landed last season in 5th place in the Premier League, a full 25 points behind Arsenal, who are also held up as clear favourites this year. – On Sunday, it will be a blast against Newcastle, without seeing too many positive changes at Anfield.

Victor Muñoz (£34.6 million), Jérémy Jacquet (60 million) and Ronald Araújo (loan with an option to buy 47.1 million) are the only ones who have come in. But with Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson out, many believe that there is still a lot of work to be done.

Three more players are on their way out of Anfield.

Three out – Kieran Morrison, Calvin Ramsay and Ifeanyi Ndukwe

Young Kieran Morrison (19) is leaving on loan at Sheffield Wednesday for the 2026/27 season. He signed a new contract with Liverpool in May and made his debut for the Northern Ireland national team in June.

Calvin Ramsay, who joined from Aberdeen in 2022, has barely played for Liverpool and has been on loan at Preston, Bolton, Wigan and Kilmarnock. Now he is ready for St. Mirren – also on loan. With a contract until 2027, his Liverpool career could effectively be over.

Ifeanyi Ndukwe, an 18-year-old centre-back, impressed greatly in the run-up. However, due to work permit issues, he cannot play senior football for Liverpool yet. Therefore, he is sent on loan to Spanish side Levante – until at least January.

Virgil Van Dijk: “Unacceptable”

With Ibrahima Konaté sold to Real Madrid, Virgil van Dijk will start the season with a new partner – either Jacquet or Araújo. And the captain does not hide the fact that last year was not good enough:

“For me personally, as a Liverpool player, last year was unacceptable. But that’s last year. This year we have an opportunity to turn it around – together with the supporters.

“Everyone knows how tough it will be, but if you’re not up for the challenge, you don’t belong here. What I feel now is that everyone is ready for the challenge. We’ll see how it goes.

“No one has anything to prove”

Van Dijk emphasizes that the team has nothing to prove – but a lot to show:

“I’m really looking forward to this season. We don’t have to prove anything to anyone – but we have to show how much we care, how much we want to fight for this brand, and realise how privileged we are as a player for Liverpool.

“If we keep working, believing in ourselves, showing our quality, staying injury-free and winning games – then we can get very excited.

The transfer window continues

Liverpool still have time to act – the transfer window closes on September 1. The question is whether Iraola will get the reinforcements he needs, or whether Van Dijk will have to lead a team that is still under construction into a tough season.
