Newcastle could be bought again by the same lady who a few years ago “freed” the Magpies from Mike Ashley several times named the worst Premier League owner of all time.

Consortium prepares giant deal worth £2 billion

Amanda Staveley is reportedly in the process of putting together a new takeover consortium – with both Newcastle United and West Ham on the block as possible targets.

The former Newcastle co-owner is now gathering support in the US and trying to raise capital for a brand new project. She sold her six percent stake in St. James’ Park in July 2024, but a return to Newcastle is still possible – should Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) decide to pull out after a difficult season.

Staveley played a key role in the £310 million acquisition of Newcastle in 2021, as she helped PIF complete the purchase from previous owner Mike Ashley.

Considered Tottenham – now Newcastle are back on the radar

According to journalist Alan Nixon, Staveley and her supporters initially considered a move to Tottenham. When they failed to secure a deal there, they turned their gaze elsewhere. Now, Newcastle are once again on the radar.

However, any return to St. James’ Park would require a significantly higher sum than the 310 million PIF paid in 2021. Staveley is believed to be trying to raise around £2 billion for a far larger project. Football Insider writes that the Saudi Arabian owners are not interested in selling.

West Ham also in the spotlight

West Ham is another Premier League club that is being closely watched as a possible option. The east London club is likely to cost more than Newcastle – despite not owning their own stadium. The main reason is that foreign investors still favour London clubs.

The valuation of West Ham will also be closely linked to their Premier League status. Relegation is likely to push the price down and potentially weaken interest from Staveley’s financial backers.

West Ham are fighting for survival – Newcastle in mid-table

West Ham are still in 17th place after Saturday’s 2-1 win over Everton – two points ahead of Tottenham in the relegation zone. Newcastle have also had a frustrating season under Eddie Howe and are in 14th place, six points ahead of West Ham.

Busy summer ahead for Newcastle?

With very little evidence of European play next season, Newcastle could be facing a hectic summer transfer window. More stars could be on their way away from St. James’ Park:

  • Anthony Gordon – the striker has become a very real target for Bayern Munich.
  • Sandro Tonali – the Italian was linked with a shock exit late in the January window and is now on the radar of both Arsenal and Manchester United ahead of the summer.

In short: Newcastle could lose both money, players and owners in what will be a crucial summer.
