An American weather meteorologist has issued a clear warning ahead of England’s quarter-final against Norway – and that could mean a postponed kick-off in Saturday’s World Cup thriller.

The Three Lions have already had more than enough heat, humidity and thunderstorms during this championship. On Monday morning, the round of 16 against Mexico was postponed by one hour due to storms in Mexico City – this after they had already struggled with the altitude conditions at the iconic Azteca Stadium. Despite everything, they swept their opponents off the pitch in a memorable 3-2 victory, becoming only the third team to beat Mexico at home in 90 games.

Now the rumors are circulating again – this time in Florida. Even if there were to be no stops at Hard Rock Stadium, locals have warned that conditions could be tough for both teams. And one particular warning has appeared: the “Swamp Ass” alert.

Weather expert issues “swamp-donkey” warning

Temperatures in Miami are expected to reach 34°C at local kick-off at 5 p.m. Thunderstorms have also been reported – and with the high humidity, the heat will feel like the mid-40s when the match starts.

Now Florida’s own meteorologist Matt Devitt has given a devastatingly clear warning to everyone who finds themselves in the Sunshine State:

“I’m issuing my very first SWAMP DONKEY WARNING for all of Florida for the next three days, thanks to extra heat and humidity. It will feel like 105-114°F. Keep your cool, folks!”

What exactly is “Swamp Ass”?

Florida’s swampy landscape is due to its unique geography, flat topography, high groundwater levels, and subtropical climate. “Swamp Ass” is a local phenomenon that occurs when heat and humidity combine.

At high humidity, the air is already saturated with water vapour – which means that sweat does not evaporate and cool you down. Instead, it gets trapped and creates a clammy, damp microclimate at the back of the pants, which, according to the Thigh Society, is reminiscent of the conditions in a tropical swamp. Not exactly dream conditions for the world’s best footballers.

Can the match be postponed?

The chances of postponement are real. The BBC’s weather forecasters report thunderstorms just before kick-off and during the match – which means that England right now have an even better chance of a delayed kick-off than they had in the previous match.

According to US Sports rules, lightning within eight miles of the stadium will result in the suspension of the match. Emergency alerts are in place, and the game will be postponed by 30 minutes every time there is another lightning strike within the zone.

So even if Norwegians and English meet on the field, it may be mother nature who sets the terms.
